urban agriculture projects supported by zea
what does ZEA fund?
ZEA partners with local organisations that are implementing urban agriculture and food security actions across the world
Each item sold transforms 10 kilos of food waste into fertile soil by funding composting systems and programs for schools, cafes and community gardens
WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?
#1 [Soil]. It can take up to 1,000 years for nature to create 1cm of fertile soil. However half of the topsoil of the planet has been lost in the last 150 years due to erosion or degradation adding pressure to critical issues such as food security and climate change.
#2 [Food]. Every year 1.3 billion tonnes of food are wasted around the world. This would be enough to feed over 3 billion people (almost half the world); at the same time close to 800 million people worldwide don't have enough to eat. Furthermore, only 1 kilogram of food waste could help to grow between 10-20 kilograms of fresh food by feeding the soil instead of feeding landfills.
#3 [Climate Change]. If food waste was a country, it would be the third largest greenhouse gas emitter after the United States and China. However, by adding organic matter to the soil (e.g. composting), we restore its capacity to hold and sequester carbon through plant's photosynthesis.
